Wow Karen, thanks for the lovely comment. I'd never heard of Lady Slippers so I looked it up. I wonder why they're so expensive? I guess because they like to hide in bogs.

Your garden sounds wonderful. We don't have any arbours yet - in fact no garden construction of any kind yet. I will also try clematis once I have something for them to climb on. Yes, gardening is very much an experiment. You try something - it works one year or doesn't. I only have one rosebush so far but I will be getting more as time goes by. I am particularly interested in those that bloom continuously.
If you can, please send pictures of your garden.

Fabulous newsletter Erika, really informative and so enjoyable. I didn't plant any veggies this year, just a big pot of herbs, tarragon being my favourite. My clematis were lovely this year and picked up three more vines at Canadian tire on clearance ($1.00 each! Wowee!) and plan to plant them by the arbour at the side of my house; I've always found clematis to be hardy. My trumpet vine is too abundant this year. Purchased some beautiful bouganvilla and a mandevilla which I'll try and winter over but if they don't survive so be it...gardening is always an experiment and adventure. That being said, I'd love some Lady Slippers but they're awfully expensive ($70?) so will admire them at RBG! Hope to visit the Winona Peach Festival and hopefully find some nice roadside vegetable/fruit stands out that way.

Kindest regards,

Oh Frank, you're such a pet. Thank you for your kind comments. Yes, Charlie and I worked hard and I figure we have another year of working hard on the upper garden - digging more beds and planting more stuff. He still has more trees to fell but that will be in the lower garden. By the end of next year the lower garden should be cleared of crappy trees and reeds etc. From there on, we will have to hire contractors to do what we want done, namely building steps from upper to lower garden, digging a pond, building some retaining walls. You know what I mean. Those are things we are not able to do.

We've just had a new septic tank installed. That was quite a job. You should have seen the heavy equipment that was involved in the job. The new septic tanks - in our case 1000 gallon - are made of concrete and are just massive. The leaching bed did not need to be replaced as it is fairly new. So, now we don't need to worry about that any time soon. It is recommended we have it pumped every 3 to 5 years.

Yes, I guess you could say we try to squeeze enjoyment out of every day. The days seem to pass so quickly, the older I get.

Give our best wishes to Nancy. We so enjoyed meeting both of you. Maybe someday you'll pay us a visit and we can catch up. Have a lovely trip, you two globetrotters. How wonderful that you two met and fell in love.

Erika,

I love your house. The colors are great. Nancy also loves this blue. I think the yellow door makes a big difference.

I also love your yard surrounding your house. You and Charlie must have done a huge amount of work since you moved. I think I see the stump of the tree he felled early on. (?)

I must say I envy your expertise when I see your work on your website(s) and your blogging. I would love to know how you got the Google Map picture with the 360 panorama? What a beautiful way to visit you and your surroundings.

I think you enjoy your life to the fullest.

Nancy and I are off to Europe on Aug 19, for three weeks. Munich, Vienna, Graz (naturally), Ljubljana, Trieste, Venice, and IOrnding (my brother Wolfgang and wife Elisabeth). Back to Munich and home on the 9th of Spt.

Enjoy your summer and the rain.

Erica, what a pretty house and garden, you seem to be settling in very well. I must say I miss you at the Camera Club..and think of you often. The banquet went very well for me this year I won three trophies, and several ribbons so think I will take a break this year from competition.

Nice job with this website as well.

How are your geraniums this year. Here in Southern California these plants stay in the ground or pots or flower boxes all year long. Mine flower at least ten months out of twelve. I also notice the day lilies off the front porch are gorgeous.
