This past weekend was beautiful. For once, no rain. I planted another row of lilacs on the boundary. With the double row, that should give us lots of privacy once they mature. I also enlarged the bed above the hen house. I don’t mind telling you, I almost needed help just walking back to the house. I was sweaty and dirty and sore from head to toe – I could barely straighten up. A shower took care of the sweat and dirt and a stiff vodka tonic eased the soreness, somewhat.
This morning I woke up to 0Celsius or 32F. No kidding – and it’s May.Oh, I shouldn’t complain. This Spring is late but it has to come sooner or later.
These last few days, I’ve been doing some planting. I got a few tomato plants in plus sowed beans, beets, lettuce, carrots, potatoes, onions, leeks. I still have a lot to go, namely cherry tomatoes, and plum tomatoes which I will use for making sauce. Also green peppers, banana peppers, hot peppers.
Oh and then there are the herbs. I’m convinced this will never end. One thing for sure, the vegetable garden will have to be enlarged.
And then there are the flowers, four 0’clocks, baby’s breath, marigolds, angel’s trumpet, calendula, rocky mountain penstemon, silver dust, yarrow, rose of sharon shrub, three types of sunflowers. I’m trying to slowly switch to perennials simply because it’s too much work to raise a variety of annuals from seed. I’m not doing this anymore.
Oh gee, I almost forgot. I got the plants I ordered namely giant fleece flower, highbush cranberry, Golden Elderberry, Japanese Maple, and at the nursery we bought three types of hydrangea – incrediball, phantom, and pinkey-winkey. We spent some money on the garden this year. Let’s hope they all grow.
